Unit 7: Communication Skills

Non-Verbal Clusters

A group of related nonverbal signals make up a cluster. Interpreting a cluster of behaviors is generally more meaningful than analyzing individual nonverbal cues. Changes in attitude and state of mind are frequently reflected in clusters.

Examples of behavioral clusters include:

- Evaluation-frame of glasses in mouth; thoughtful, intense expression.

- Boredom-Slouching in seat, yawning, staring out the window.

- Frustration-rubbing forehead with hand; tense, worried expression; throwing arms up in the air.
