Unit 7: Communication Skills
Guidelines for Good Feedback
We give poor feedback more out of habit than intent. You can change bad habits by avoiding “the dirty dozen’’ and by following these guidelines for delivering good feedback. The essence of good feedback is that it provides information to someone in a form that the person will find helpful for improving behavior.
• Be specific and timely.
- Deliver the message as soon as possible after the behavior in question.
- Criticize or compliment the behavior, not the person.
- Phrase messages to encourage positive changes rather than defensive behavior.
- Provide specific suggestions for remedying the situation and offer to help.
• Praise the performance of others wherever possible.
- Complimentary feedback rewards behavior and improves the chances that this behavior will continue. It also facilitates positive relationships and teamwork.
• Avoid critical feedback, if possible, and always avoid blaming.
- These behaviors lead to hostility and resistance to change.
• Give credit where credit is due.
- Let others know you welcome their feedback.
