Unit 5: Written Examination Preparation

Persons Leaving The Area

Be aware of persons leaving the immediate area as you approach. It is not uncommon for a prowler to run a short distance through backyards and then walk casually down the street to complete his escape.

If a person leaving the immediate area of the prowler call appears to be nervous or exhibits an unusual interest in your activity, stop and ask the person to identify himself. Particular attention should be given to signs of recent exertion or nervousness such as sweating, rapid breathing, and uncertain, flustered responses to questioning.

Obtain identification from the person and record this information on a field identification card. If you feel the person may be the prowler, remain with him and request that another officer be sent to the caller’s
residence to conduct the initial investigation. The officer who responds to the call should immediately relay
any information he finds which might help to link the suspect to the crime. Such evidence as a physical
description, clothing description, or distinctive footprint pattern can quickly incriminate or exonerate a suspect.
