Quotation Marks

Direct quotes should be placed within quotation marks. If there is an introductory clause, a comma precedes the first quotation mark and the first word of the quotation is capitalized. The ending punctuation goes within the quotation mark. If the quotation is followed by a clause, end it with a comma.

Example : John asked, “How do you do?”

Example : “I’m fine,” Sue replied.

If the quotation is broken, punctuate as follows :

Example : “How often,” Carlos asked, “do you walk your dog?”
